This is perhaps one of the ultimate collectible watches I’ve handled, for an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak lover this may be the end game. This is number 001 of this reference. There can be only one number 1!
The rarest reference 14700 is a incredibly peculiar watch for reasons I will explain now:
Made for a very, very short time in the early 90s, it came as a fresh intermediate size replacing reference 4100. Clocking in at 36mm in diameter, it visually looks way bigger than it’s successor reference 14790 due to the bezel design and dial overture size. It is also extremely thin with just 8mm of height.
When seen on a wrist or in a display it easy to mistake it for the Jumbo 39mm Royal Oak, in fact side by size the visual difference is extremely narrow. On the 14700 the dial measures 28mm, on reference 5402 the dial measures 29mm and on a Patek Philippe Nautilus it measures 27mm!?? Visually bigger but perfect for those that wear a classic size.
The case is sharp with strong edges, defined angles and crisp satin finish. The watch was never polished and shows some signs of wear. As a collector and AP enthusiast this is the condition I look for, Pure and Untouched.
The dial is extremely exciting and iconic with it’s vintage “petite tapisserie” blue / black / grey color and the smaller font text found only on the earliest versions. No blemishes or defects. This watch is as pure as it can get.
The bracelet is fully linked and stands erect in fine conditions. The clasp and buckle are pristine.
The automatic movement based on the iconic JLC caliber used in the Jumbo as well is running fine. I do not have service history for it.
Accompanied by it’s original Audemars Piguet warranty, sold in 1990 in Switzerland near Geneva, along with it’s Audemars Piguet cream box.
All in all the perfect iconic, rare and special Royal Oak deserving of a world class collection.
