A very cool and rare Cartier retailed watch, made by Corum in the 1970s and sold in the New York 5th avenue boutique.
Striking are the size, the slimness of the case fitting an automatic movement (gasp!) , the details of the metal work on the case along with that wonderful cabochon sapphire crown, 70s Cartier NY to the max!
The 18k yellow gold case measuring 35mm wide x 42mm in length and appearing incredibly larger and masculine on the wrist ( visually as a 37.5mm diameter watch) is in pristine conditions with strong even lugs and beautiful detailed ribbing on the sides and case back. The hand engraved Cartier stock number is strongly visible on the upper right lug. The strap measures 23mm between the lugs and adds lots of umph to the masculine look.
The dial incorporating the Corum logo at 12, the Cartier signature along with the Automatic script branding typical of late 60s early 70s Swiss made ultra thin self winding calibers. The champagne background is attractive and the sector like indices give much strength to the look. Aging is visible between 1 and 5.
The automatic Corum movement is running well and keeping time.
On vintage lizard skin strap and it’s original CC logo Cartier 18k made in Italy buckle (I’ve seen these on Cartier NY 70s watches).
A fine testimony of the Cartier NY style of the 70s, the Studio 54 era… bold – opulent – and fun!
